A day trip from Geneva to Montreux means roughly 1h15–1h45 each way by train. You’ll spend more time traveling than you might like, but the payoff is decent if you like lakes, mountains, and a relaxed Swiss town vibe. Expect a pretty but touristy lakeside promenade, the famous Château de Chillon (which is genuinely worth seeing), and views of the Alps across the water. The old town is small and can be walked end-to-end in 20 minutes. In summer it gets crowded with day-trippers and tour groups; in winter it’s quieter but colder and some outdoor cafés close.
Best time is late spring (May–June) or early fall (September–early October) when the weather is mild and crowds are lighter. Expect to pay around CHF 120–190 per person for transport, castle entry, a simple lunch, coffee, and maybe a boat ride or small tasting. Add another CHF 40–60 if you want a nicer meal or taxi transfers. Honest tip: prioritize the castle and a relaxed walk along the lakefront; skip trying to also squeeze in Chaplin’s World or full vineyard tours unless you’re happy rushing everything. Another tip: buy the Swiss Travel Pass or a day ticket in advance if you’re doing multiple trips – it often works out cheaper than individual tickets and covers the boat if you want one.
