Deep Sea Fishing in Miami: What to Know

Expect a half-day or full-day trip heading out from Miami Beach or the bayside area, usually 8-20 miles offshore. You'll troll for sailfish, mahi-mahi, kingfish, tuna, or grouper depending on the season. The boat ride can be bumpy, especially in winter when the seas are choppier. Most trips include rods, bait, and a mate who handles the heavy work, but you'll do the fighting. It's genuinely fun if you like being on the water and have realistic expectations – you're not guaranteed a trophy fish every time. Bring sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, motion sickness meds if you're prone to it, and a cooler if you want to keep your catch.

Best time is late spring through early fall (April–October) when the seas are calmer and the variety of fish is highest. Winter can still be good for sailfish but expect rougher rides and fewer calm days. Plan on paying around $400–$800 for a half-day private charter for up to 4 people or $150–$250 per person on a shared party boat. Full-day trips run $700–$1,400. Book a smaller private charter if you can – it's worth it for the attention and flexibility. Skip the cheapest walk-up options at the marinas; they're often overcrowded and less professional.
