Diving and Snorkeling with Manta Rays in Bali

Expect a mix of excitement and patience. Most trips head to Manta Bay or similar sites off Nusa Penida where currents bring plankton that attracts the rays. You'll snorkel or dive in decent visibility (10-20m), watching mantas glide overhead or do barrel rolls as they feed. Encounters can last from a few minutes to half an hour; sometimes you see one or two, other days a dozen. The water is usually cool (24-27°C) and the currents can be strong, so you need to be a reasonably comfortable swimmer. Between manta sites you'll usually stop at one or two reefs for turtles and colorful fish. It's a full-day boat trip that includes lunch and can feel long if the mantas don't show.

Best time is May to October when seas are calmer and visibility is better. December to March often has rougher water and poorer sightings. Expect to pay around $60-120 per person depending on whether it's a basic snorkel tour or a smaller group dive trip with better guides and equipment. Private or semi-private options sit at the higher end.

Pick a smaller boat tour with a maximum of 8-10 people rather than the big cattle boats that visit four sites in a rush. Skip the packages that add a land tour or kayaking if your main goal is mantas; they just make an already long day longer. Bring your own mask and snorkel if you have them; rental gear is often average.
