The Duomo rooftop is one of the best things you can do in Milan. You stand among hundreds of marble spires and statues with sweeping views over the city, the Alps visible on clear days. It feels surprisingly intimate despite the crowds. Expect to spend 30–60 minutes up there. The walkways are narrow in places and the stone can be uneven, so wear comfortable shoes. It’s exposed to wind and sun, which makes it dramatically better in cooler weather than in the heat of July.
The best time is spring (April–June) or fall (September–October). Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst crowds and harsh midday light. Expect to pay around €25–45 per person depending on whether you choose a basic lift ticket or a guided skip-the-line tour. The guided version is worth it if you want context; otherwise the self-guided lift ticket is perfectly fine.
Tip: Take the elevator up and walk down the stairs – you see more detail on the way down and it’s easier on the knees. Skip the museum and crypt unless you have extra time; they’re forgettable compared to being on the roof. Book at least a day ahead in high season or you’ll waste time in the regular ticket line.
