Dynamic Earth is a modern interactive museum that walks you through the story of our planet using hands-on exhibits, simulations, and a giant 360° dome show. Expect to spend 90 minutes to two and a half hours here. You'll ride a time machine through geological eras, feel the rumble of volcanoes and glaciers, crawl through ice tunnels, and explore weather, oceans, and space. It's aimed at families but works well for curious adults too. The dome film is the highlight for many; the rest feels like a well-designed science centre with plenty of buttons to press and short videos to watch. It's indoors, so weather-proof, though the location near Holyrood Palace means you can combine it with a walk up Arthur's Seat afterwards.
Best time to visit is spring or autumn on a weekday morning when it's quieter. Summer and weekends get busy with school groups and the queues for the dome shows can add up. Expect to pay around £18-£25 per adult and £11-£16 per child depending on whether you book ahead or add the dome experience. Annual passes can make sense if you're in Edinburgh for more than a few days or visiting with kids who love museums.
Pick the dome show if you only have time for one upgrade; skip the gift shop unless you need postcards. Go early or late in the day to avoid crowds, and wear comfortable shoes; there are a few low tunnels and ramps that involve a bit of moving around.
