The Eisbach wave in Munich's English Garden is a genuine urban surfing phenomenon: a standing river wave right in the middle of the city. A typical lesson lasts 2–3 hours and includes wetsuit, board, and instruction from a local. Expect cold water (even in summer), a powerful and fast-moving wave, and a very different feel from ocean surfing. Most first-timers spend the session learning to pop up, balance, and ride for a few seconds at a time. It's fun and surprisingly addictive, but it's not a relaxed beach experience — the water is chilly, the current is strong, and you'll probably fall a lot.
Best time is June to early September when the water temperature is highest (still only 16–19°C). Avoid shoulder seasons unless you don't mind very cold water. Expect to pay around €120–180 per person for a small-group lesson including all gear. Private lessons sit at the higher end.
Tip: Book the shorter 2-hour morning session if it's your first time — three hours can feel long when you're constantly swimming back up against the current. Skip trying to surf the main wave on your own without instruction; the locals are skilled and the wave is trickier than it looks from the bridge.
