Eisbach River Surfing in Munich: What to Know

Eisbach surfing means riding a standing river wave right in the middle of Munich's English Garden. The wave is powerful, fast, and surprisingly consistent year-round thanks to the cold alpine water feeding the Eisbach. Expect a raw urban experience: spectators on the bridge, wetsuits mandatory, and a mix of locals who rip and beginners getting tossed. Sessions are short and intense – you'll be in the water 30-60 seconds at a time before swimming back up. It's more spectacle and adrenaline than relaxed surf session.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when air temperatures make the cold water tolerable. In winter the water is brutally cold but the wave is often cleaner with fewer crowds. Expect to pay around €60–110 for a 2–3 hour guided lesson including wetsuit, board, and instruction. Solo experienced surfers can jump in for free after watching the lineup rules.

Tip: Book a small-group beginner lesson if it's your first time – the guides teach you how to read the wave and avoid the dangerous sections. Skip trying to surf it without instruction on a random afternoon; the current is strong and the impact zone is unforgiving. Watch from the bridge first to decide if this is your kind of fun.
