Empire State Building Tickets: Worth It?

Expect a classic New York experience: long security lines, crowded elevators, and finally stepping onto the 86th-floor outdoor deck for that iconic 360-degree Manhattan view. The wind can be strong up there and the deck gets packed, especially at sunset. It's not a peaceful hidden spot – it's busy, loud, and touristy – but the panorama is genuinely impressive on a clear day. The indoor 102nd floor is smaller, glassed-in, and usually less worth the upgrade unless you hate wind or crowds.

Best time is late fall through early spring on a weekday morning; summer and holiday weekends are crowded and hot. Expect to pay around $45–$60 for a standard timed ticket to the 86th floor. Express or sunrise/sunset slots add $20–$40. Skip the bundled “skip-the-line” packages unless you’re short on time – the regular line moves reasonably if you arrive at your booked slot.

Honest tip: buy the basic 86th-floor ticket and go early on a clear weekday. The views are nearly identical to the premium options for most visitors, and you’ll save enough for a decent bagel afterward. Only upgrade to the 102nd floor if you really want the higher vantage and fewer people.
