Escalade Wall Climbing in Manila: Worth It?

Manila's indoor climbing scene offers a solid way to break up city sightseeing with some physical activity. Expect modern air-conditioned gyms with a mix of bouldering walls and roped routes, mostly top-rope or auto-belays rather than lead climbing. Routes range from beginner-friendly vertical walls to steeper overhangs. The experience is straightforward: rent shoes and a harness, get a quick belay lesson if needed, and climb at your own pace. It's popular with both locals and expats, so gyms can get busy after work hours and on weekends. The heat and pollution outside make these climate-controlled venues particularly appealing.

The best time to go is during the drier months from November to April when Manila's humidity is slightly more bearable, though indoor climbing works year-round. Expect to pay around 800-1500 pesos per person for a day pass including gear rental. Add another 500-800 pesos if you need a quick intro lesson. It's cheaper than most tourist activities but still represents decent value for a few hours of active fun.

Pick mid-week daytime sessions to avoid crowds and get more staff attention. Skip trying to do multiple different gyms in one trip - facilities are quite similar and travel time across Manila traffic eats your day. Bring a towel and water; most places have showers but aren't luxury spas.
