Evensong in London: A Practical Guide

Evensong is the most rewarding way to experience London’s great churches and cathedrals. You sit in the choir stalls or nave while a professional or top-notch student choir sings a short, beautiful service of about 45 minutes, mostly in English with some Latin. The music is the point: sublime, atmospheric, and usually free. Expect stone interiors, candlelight in winter, and a mix of tourists and regulars. No talking, no photos during the service. It feels like stepping into a different century for three-quarters of an hour.

The best time is late spring through early autumn (May–September) when the days are long and the major choirs are in full voice before they disappear for summer holidays. Weekdays are usually better than weekends. Expect to pay around £0–£8: most places are still free, though a few now charge a modest amount for tourists while keeping it free for worshippers. St Paul’s, Westminster Abbey, and Southwark Cathedral are the big hitters; all three deliver excellent music, but the scale and acoustics differ noticeably.

Pick Westminster Abbey if you want the full “classic” experience with a large professional choir; skip the evening tour or paid add-ons there. Go to St Paul’s on a Tuesday or Wednesday if you want to sit right in the choir stalls. Avoid tourist-heavy Fridays and school-holiday periods if you dislike crowds. Just show up 15–20 minutes early, dress respectfully, and turn your phone off. You’ll leave calmer and more moved than you expected.
