Felsenegg Cable Car Hike from Zurich

This is a straightforward half-day escape from Zurich that gives you quick access to open views without a long drive or serious hike. You ride a cable car up from the edge of the city to a ridge at about 800m, then walk a gentle, well-marked path along the Felsenegg with wide views over Lake Zurich, the city, and the Alps on clear days. The walk itself is easy—mostly flat or gently undulating—for 45 minutes to two hours depending how far you go. Expect families, trail runners, and a simple restaurant at the top that serves decent Swiss food. The whole trip from central Zurich takes 1.5–2 hours each way using public transport plus the cable car.

Best time is late spring through early autumn (May–October). Summer offers the longest days and warmest weather for sitting outside, while September and early October usually deliver the clearest air for mountain views. Expect to pay around CHF 30–60 per person total, covering the return public transport ticket from Zurich and the cable car rides; it’s cheaper if you already have a day pass. One solid tip: skip the organized coach tours and do it independently with the S-Bahn and local bus—it’s simple, more flexible, and half the price. Another: walk at least to the Uetliberg viewpoint if the weather is good; the panorama is noticeably better than staying near the cable car station.
