Hong Kong Ferry Rides: Worth Doing?

A Hong Kong ferry ride is one of the cheapest and most enjoyable ways to see the city. Expect a simple, no-frills experience: you board, find a seat (outside is best), and cross Victoria Harbour with the skyscrapers sliding past. The classic short crossing takes about 10 minutes; longer sightseeing trips run 45-60 minutes and circle the harbour. Daytime gives you clear views and photos; at night the buildings light up and it feels more dramatic, though it can get crowded with tour groups. The motion is gentle – even if you get seasick easily you should be fine.

Best time is October to early December when the weather is cooler and the air is clearer. Avoid summer if possible – it's hot, humid, and typhoon season can cancel sailings. Expect to pay around $3–8 for a regular harbour crossing and $15–35 for a proper sightseeing cruise, depending on time of day and whether you want a seat with a view. The regular commuter ferries are the smartest choice if you just want the classic experience without the sales pitch.

Tip: sit on the right side when heading from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island for the best skyline view. Skip the overpriced dinner cruises unless you really want the meal – the regular evening ferry does almost the same route for a fraction of the price and without the noise.
