Is the Ferry to Bainbridge Worth It?

The ferry ride from Seattle to Bainbridge Island is a straightforward 35-minute crossing with solid views of the city skyline and Puget Sound. Expect a mix of commuters, day-trippers, and tourists. The boat has indoor seating, restrooms, a small café, and outdoor decks that can be windy or cold. Once you dock in Winslow, the town is an easy walk with cafés, shops, and trails. It's a low-stress half-day or full-day trip if you want to escape the city without renting a car.

Best time is late spring through early fall on a clear weekday morning. Summer weekends get crowded with long car lines; winter brings shorter days, rain, and less impressive views. Expect to pay around $10-15 for a walk-on round-trip ticket. Bikes are cheap to bring; cars add significant cost and hassle if you're not planning to drive the island.

Pick a mid-morning sailing so you have time to walk around Bainbridge before catching an afternoon boat back. Skip the overpriced onboard snacks and eat in town instead. If it's your first visit, walk off the ferry and head straight up the hill toward the main street rather than lingering at the terminal.
