Taking the ferry to one of Hong Kong’s outlying islands is one of the simplest and most enjoyable day trips you can do. Expect a working boat used by locals carrying everything from groceries to schoolkids, not a tourist cruiser. The ride itself is usually pleasant with good views of the harbour and islands, though it can get choppy in bad weather. Once you arrive, the pace slows right down: no cars on most islands, just bikes, paths, and small seafood restaurants. You can easily spend a few hours hiking, eating, or just sitting by the sea before catching a boat back.
The best time is October to April when the weather is cooler and the seas are calmer. Summers are hot, humid, and the ferries get packed on weekends. Expect to pay around HK$30–80 return depending on the island, day of the week, and whether you take the faster or ordinary ferry. Weekday ordinary-class tickets are the cheapest.
Pick Cheung Chau or Lamma for a relaxed first trip; both have decent hiking loops, beaches, and places to eat without feeling overwhelmed. Skip trying to do more than one island in a day unless you have lots of time; the ferry schedules are not frequent enough for comfortable island-hopping. Bring sunscreen, water, and cash—ATMs and shops are limited.
