Visiting the Field Museum in Chicago

The Field Museum is a huge, serious natural history museum with excellent dinosaur skeletons, Egyptian mummies, taxidermy animals, and cultural artifacts from around the world. Expect to spend at least three to four hours if you want to see the highlights without rushing. The building is enormous and a bit maze-like, so wear comfortable shoes. It gets crowded on weekends and during school holidays, but the sheer size means you can usually find quieter corners. The experience feels more like a research institution than a theme park—solid, sometimes old-school exhibits mixed with genuinely world-class ones.

Best time to visit is weekday mornings from September to April when crowds are lighter and Chicago weather isn’t brutal. Summer is peak season with long lines and sticky heat outside. Expect to pay around $25–$35 per adult for basic admission; children are cheaper and kids under three are usually free. Add another $10–$20 if you want a special exhibit or 3D movie ticket.

Honest tips: Prioritize the dinosaur halls and the ancient Egypt section—they’re the strongest parts of the collection. Skip or quickly walk through the second-floor plants and economic botany hall unless you have a specific interest; it feels dated. Grab a map or use the museum’s free app when you arrive so you don’t waste time wandering in circles.
