Expect a full day on the water starting around 6-7am, bouncing around in a 25-35ft boat with a captain and mate who handle most of the work. You’ll troll for marlin, sailfish, dorado, tuna, or wahoo depending on the season. It’s genuinely fun if you like being on the ocean, but it can be tiring, windy, and sometimes you just don’t catch much. Most trips are 4, 6, or 8 hours; the longer ones give you better odds but also mean more time getting beat up by the Pacific swell. Seasickness is common—take medication if you’re even slightly prone.
Best time is May through November when water is warmer and billfish are more active. December to April is cooler, calmer, and cheaper but fishing can be slower. Expect to pay around $350–$650 for a half-day private charter for up to 4 people and $550–$950 for a full day. Shared “open” boats are cheaper per person but you’re fishing with strangers and following their schedule.
Tip: Book a private boat if you can swing it—far better experience. Skip the super-cheap open-boat deals and anything advertising “guaranteed” catches. Bring your own snacks, water, and sunscreen; most boats supply basic tackle and a cooler with ice for your fish.
