A floating market tour means leaving Bangkok early (usually 6-7am) for a 1.5-2 hour drive to Damnoen Saduak. You'll board a longtail boat and glide through narrow canals lined with vendors selling coconut sweets, noodles, fruit, and souvenirs from their boats. It's crowded, touristy, and very photogenic, but the genuine local shopping scene has mostly moved elsewhere. Expect lots of photo stops, a stop at the Mae Klong railway market where the train runs through the stalls, and plenty of sales pressure. The whole trip takes 6-8 hours door-to-door.
Best time is November to February when it's cooler and less rainy. Expect to pay around $40-80 per person for a half-day tour including transport, guide, and boat ride; solo rowboat rentals start cheaper if you make your own way there. Skip the overpriced souvenirs and over-sweetened coffee. Do try the fresh coconut or grilled bananas from the boats—they're actually good and cheap. If you want something less packaged, consider the smaller markets closer to the city instead.
