The Bloemenmarkt is a compact, floating market along the Singel canal where vendors sell tulip bulbs, fresh flowers, and souvenirs from houseboats. Expect a lively but tourist-heavy scene with strong smells of flowers and frituur, narrow walkways, and plenty of photo opportunities. It's more of a quick wander than a full morning activity—most people spend 20-40 minutes here. The best time to visit is spring (March to mid-May) when tulips are in season and the displays are at their brightest. In summer and fall you'll still find plenty of flowers and bulbs, but the atmosphere feels more commercial.
Expect to pay around €5-15 total. Individual bulbs or small bouquets start cheap, while packaged gift sets and premium varieties cost more. One honest tip: buy tulip bulbs only if you're flying home or have checked import rules—many countries ban soil or restrict certain varieties, so read the labels carefully. Skip the souvenir tchotchkes and overpriced packaged “Dutch cheese” sets sold at the ends; they're not the point of the market. Go early in the day before the tour groups arrive if you want breathing room.
