Gamboa Rainforest Aerial Tram: Worth It?

The aerial tram glides for about 20 minutes through the upper canopy of secondary rainforest near the Panama Canal. You’ll see plenty of green, occasional birds, and sometimes sloths or monkeys if you’re lucky. The experience is calm rather than thrilling; it’s essentially a slow, open-air cable car with a guide pointing things out. Many visitors combine it with the observation tower that overlooks the canal itself, which is often the clearer highlight. Expect a decent but not mind-blowing rainforest overview—solid if you’re short on time and staying in Panama City, less essential if you’re heading to better-preserved parks elsewhere.

Best time is the dry season (December to April) when rain is less likely to limit visibility and trails are easier. Tours run year-round but mornings tend to be brighter and calmer. Expect to pay around $80–$150 per person depending on whether you go solo, with a group, or add transport from the city and lunch. Private transfers push it toward the higher end.

Tip: Skip the tram if you already plan serious jungle time in Soberanía or elsewhere; the tower and short forest walk are usually enough. If you do go, choose the earliest available slot to beat crowds and heat. Bring binoculars and insect repellent—the canopy is surprisingly buggy even at height.
