Should You Do a Garden Tour in Charleston?

Charleston garden tours let you walk through private historic gardens that are usually closed to the public. Expect a mix of small group walks with a guide who talks about plantings, history, and landscape design. The pace is leisurely but you’ll be on your feet for 90 minutes to two hours. Some tours stick to one property; others visit two or three in a neighborhood. The gardens themselves range from formal boxwood parterres to relaxed cottage-style spaces filled with camellias, ferns, and old roses. It’s pleasant if you like plants and architecture, but can feel repetitive if you don’t.

The best time is mid-March to early May when azaleas, dogwoods, and spring bulbs are at peak. Late fall (November) is quieter with good foliage color and far fewer crowds. Summer is hot, humid, and honestly not worth it unless you love sweating. Expect to pay around $45–$75 per person depending on whether it’s a single garden or a multi-stop tour; add a bit more if it includes a house interior.

Tip: choose a tour that focuses on one or two gardens in depth rather than a rushed sampler— you’ll actually remember what you saw. Skip the big group bus tours; they move too fast and you spend half the time waiting for everyone to regroup. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat; many paths are uneven brick or crushed shell.
