Should You Do the Northeast Coast Geopark Tour?

This day trip takes you out of Taipei to the northeast coast, mixing weird rock formations at Yehliu Geopark with old mountain towns and waterfalls. Expect a packed itinerary: 8–10 hours total, plenty of bus time, and crowds at every stop. Yehliu’s sandstone shapes are genuinely striking if you get there early; Jiufen’s teahouse alleys and ocean views feel atmospheric even in light rain; Shifen lets you release sky lanterns or walk the old railway. It’s a solid mix of natural oddities and nostalgic Taiwanese scenery, but it’s not a relaxed nature escape — it’s a classic tourist route that delivers decent photos and decent variety in one go.

Best time is October to early April when it’s cooler and the northeast coast is often misty and dramatic. Summer is hot, humid, and crowded. Expect to pay around US$50–90 per person depending on group size, inclusions, and whether it’s a small van or big bus tour. Private options push toward the higher end.

Pick Yehliu early in the morning before the tour buses stack up, and keep Jiufen for the late afternoon or evening when the lanterns come on. Skip the lantern release at Shifen if you care about the environment — the paper debris is a real problem. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes for uneven paths, and don’t over-schedule the day after.
