Geopark & Old Streets Day Tour from Taipei

This is a long but very doable day trip that combines Yehliu Geopark’s weird rock formations with the old Japanese-era streets of Jiufen and the lantern-filled sky of Shifen. Expect a packed schedule: you’ll spend about 90 minutes at Yehliu walking the headland among the bizarre sandstone shapes, 2–3 hours in Jiufen exploring steep alleys, teahouses and shops, and roughly an hour in Shifen releasing a sky lantern and walking the old railway track. It’s scenic but touristy—crowds are real, especially at Jiufen on weekends. The van rides between spots add up to about 3–4 hours total in transit.

Best time is October to early April when the northeast coast is cooler and clearer. Summer is hot, humid, and often rainy. Expect to pay around US$35–70 per person for a shared tour including transport and entrance fees; private tours run US$180–280 depending on group size. Honest tip: prioritize Yehliu early in the morning before the tour buses arrive and spend more time in Jiufen. Skip the lantern release in Shifen if you dislike overt tourist rituals—it’s fun for kids but otherwise feels forced.
