Yehliu Geopark Day Trip from Taipei: Worth It?

Yehliu Geopark is a small coastal headland famous for its bizarre rock formations shaped by wave erosion and wind. Expect a 1.5–2 hour visit walking on paved paths among hundreds of weird sandstone shapes, the most famous being the “Queen’s Head.” It’s genuinely interesting for the first 45 minutes, after which it becomes repetitive unless you’re really into geology. The site gets crowded with tour groups by 10am; the wind is almost always strong, and there’s very little shade. It pairs naturally with nearby northeast coast stops like Jiufen’s old street and Shifen’s waterfall or sky lanterns, creating a full-day loop that most travelers enjoy.

Best time is October to early April when it’s cooler and less humid. Summers are hot, sticky, and the park feels miserable under direct sun. Expect to pay around US$80–130 per person for a full-day group tour from Taipei that includes Yehliu, Jiufen, Shifen, transport, and usually lunch. A half-day Yehliu-only trip with hotel pickup runs about US$45–70. Independent travelers can do it cheaper by bus but it takes longer and requires transfers.

Smart pick: combine Yehliu with Jiufen only and skip Shifen if your day feels packed — the lantern release is touristy and the waterfall is nice but not essential. Wear sturdy shoes with grip; the rocks near the sea can be slippery, and bring a light jacket even in summer because the coastal wind is cold.
