The Getty Center sits on a hill above the 405 with striking modern architecture, sweeping city views, and solid collections of European painting, sculpture, and photography. Expect a full half-day: the tram ride up, decent crowds, and a lot of walking between buildings and gardens. The art is excellent but not overwhelming; you can see the highlights comfortably in 2–3 hours. It’s clean, well-organized, and free to enter—the only real cost is parking or transport and whatever food or souvenirs you buy on site.
Best time is weekday mornings in spring or fall when the light is good and crowds are lighter. Summer weekends get packed and hot; winter can be chilly but the views are often clearest. Expect to pay around $20–40 per person total if you drive and eat there, or $50–90 if you join a small-group guided tour from central LA that includes transport.
Skip the big organized bus tours unless you hate planning—they rush you. Book a private or small-group tour with a good museum-trained guide if you want context on the art; otherwise just go on your own with the free app or map. Bring water, wear comfortable shoes, and don’t try to see every gallery in one visit.
