Is a Giant Sequoias Tour from San Jose Worth It?

A day trip from San Jose to see giant sequoias usually means 14–15 hours on the road with a lot of driving. You’ll spend roughly 3–4 hours in the Mariposa Grove area among the big trees, plus time in Yosemite Valley if the tour includes both. Expect beautiful, massive sequoias that feel genuinely impressive up close, but also crowded parking lots, shuttles, and the typical national-park hustle. The trip is long and tiring; you’ll be on and off the bus most of the day.

Best time is late May through early October when the roads are open and weather is decent. Summer (June–August) is busiest and hottest. Spring and fall give you fewer crowds and nicer temperatures. Expect to pay around $280–$350 per person for a standard full-day tour that includes transportation and a guide; food, park entry fees, and tips are extra.

Tip: Choose the tour that spends more time actually walking among the sequoias rather than just photo stops. Skip adding Yosemite Valley if you mainly want big trees — it turns an already long day into an exhausting one.
