Gold Reef City is a theme park built around a former gold mine on the outskirts of Johannesburg. The main draw is the underground mine tour where you descend in a cage to see (recreated) working conditions from the gold rush era, followed by a gold pour demonstration. Above ground you'll find roller coasters, arcade games, a small museum, and a casino. The whole place feels like a slightly dated mix of educational site and amusement park. Expect it to take 4–6 hours if you do the mine tour plus a few rides; it's popular with families and school groups, so it can get loud and crowded.
Best time to visit is during the cooler, drier months from May to August when temperatures are comfortable for being outdoors. Summers (Nov–Feb) are hot and often wet, which can shut down outdoor rides. Expect to pay around $30–70 per person depending on whether you just buy mine tour entry or add rides and transport from the city. A full-day guided tour that includes Soweto and other Johannesburg sights will push the higher end or beyond.
Honest tip: definitely do the underground mine tour if you're interested in Johannesburg's mining history; it's the only genuinely worthwhile part. Skip the theme park rides unless you're traveling with kids – they're average and the real value is in the history. Pair it with a Soweto visit if you can; doing Gold Reef City in isolation feels a bit thin for most adult travelers.
