Maokong Gondola Guide: Worth It?

The Maokong gondola lifts you from the edge of Taipei up the steep hillside in about 20-25 minutes, offering sweeping views over the city, the river, and eventually the tea plantations below. Expect a mix of closed and open-air cabins; the open ones give the best photos but can be breezy and occasionally sway. At the top you'll find hiking trails, teahouses, and a slightly cooler microclimate. It's straightforward but can get crowded on weekends with long lines for tickets and boarding.

Best time is a clear weekday morning in autumn or early winter when the air is crispest and visibility is good. Avoid summer afternoons when thunderstorms often roll in and the ride can be suspended. Expect to pay around NT$200-400 per person round-trip depending on whether you choose a regular or crystal (open-floor) cabin and if you add any shuttle or tea-tasting packages.

Honest tip: buy the crystal cabin ticket if the weather is good and lines aren't crazy — the view straight down is the whole point. Skip the overpriced teahouses right next to the station; walk 10-15 minutes uphill to the smaller family-run ones for better tea and fewer tour groups.
