Should You Visit Griffith Observatory?

Griffith Observatory sits high above Los Angeles with some of the best free panoramic views in the city. Expect a mix of serious astronomy exhibits, telescopes you can actually look through (when staff are on duty), and crowds that can feel overwhelming on weekends. The planetarium show is solid if you like science, but the real draw is standing outside at dusk watching the city lights come on from the Hollywood Sign all the way to downtown. Parking is limited and the walk from the lot can be steep; weekends turn the place into a bit of a circus with influencers and selfie sticks.

The best time is weekday mornings or late afternoons, especially in spring or fall when the marine layer burns off but it’s not brutally hot. Summer weekends are packed and winter can bring early closures or fog. Expect to pay around $15–35 per person total—mostly for parking or the planetarium show if you skip the free areas. Guided tours add more.

Pick the outdoor terraces and main exhibit hall; skip the overpriced gift shop and any add-on tours unless you’re a hardcore space nerd. Bring water, wear decent shoes, and go early to avoid the worst traffic up the hill. It’s worth a couple of hours if you like views and science, but not essential if your schedule is tight.
