Griffith Park Hike Guide: Worth It?

Griffith Park offers solid hiking right in the middle of Los Angeles with surprisingly good views once you gain some elevation. Expect a mix of exposed, dry trails, steady climbs, and panoramic sights of the Hollywood Sign, downtown skyline, and the San Gabriel Mountains on clear days. The most popular route to the Observatory or higher peaks is about 3–4 miles round trip with 800–1,000 feet of gain. It’s moderately strenuous, dusty in summer, and can get crowded on weekends. Wildlife is mostly ground squirrels and hawks; you’re unlikely to see much else.

The best time is late fall through spring, especially December–April when temperatures are comfortable and the hills can actually look green. Avoid midday in summer unless you enjoy baking on shadeless slopes. Expect to pay around $0–$60 total per person: the park itself is free to enter, parking is usually $4–10 depending on where you leave the car, and a guided group hike runs $35–60 if you want navigation and commentary taken care of.

Pick the trail that heads toward the Observatory or Mount Bell if you want the classic views without excessive crowds. Skip the lower paved loops near the main entrances—they feel more like a suburban park than a proper hike. Bring at least 1 liter of water per person, wear proper shoes, and start early to beat both the heat and the tour buses.
