Grossmünster Tower Climb in Zurich

The climb up Grossmünster's tower is straightforward but genuinely rewarding. Expect 150–180 narrow stone steps in a tight spiral with occasional landings. The church interior is plain, so most people head straight for the tower. At the top you get a proper 360° view over Zurich’s rooftops, the river, and the lake with the Alps behind them on clear days. It takes 5–10 minutes up and down depending on your fitness and how many people are pausing for photos. The stairs can feel claustrophobic if you dislike tight spaces or if it’s busy.

Best time is late spring through early autumn on a clear weekday morning. Expect to pay around CHF 5–8 for a simple tower ticket. Summer weekends draw crowds and the stairs get warmer and slower; winter offers fewer visitors but you’ll need decent weather or the views disappear in low cloud. Skip the guided city walking tours that start elsewhere and just tack on the tower – they add time and cost without improving the climb itself.

One solid tip: go right before the tower closes if you want fewer people at the top. Bring a small bottle of water; there’s nowhere to buy drinks once you start climbing. If you’re short on time or it’s raining hard, you can comfortably skip it – the lakeside or Lindenhof viewpoints give similar panoramas without the stairs.
