Grossmünster Tower: Worth the Climb?

The climb up Grossmünster's tower is straightforward but physical: 187 steep, narrow stone steps with occasional tight turns. At the top you get an excellent 360° view over Zurich's rooftops, the Limmat River, Lake Zurich, and the Alps in the distance on clear days. The church itself is impressive but fairly plain inside; most people go purely for the tower. Expect it to take 10-15 minutes up and down depending on your fitness and how many people are ahead of you. It can feel crowded and warm in summer.

Best time is late spring or early autumn on a weekday morning. Summer weekends get noticeably busy and the light can be harsh for photos. In winter you’ll still get decent views on clear days but it’s cold at the top and the tower sometimes closes early. Expect to pay around CHF 5-8 for the tower climb. A combined church + tower ticket is only slightly more.

Pick the tower climb if the weather is decent – that’s the main payoff. Skip the paid guided church tour unless you’re particularly interested in Reformation history; the interior is quick to see on your own. Wear proper shoes with decent grip; the steps are worn and can be slippery after rain.
