A typical guided walking tour in San Jose lasts 2–3 hours and covers the downtown historic core on foot. Expect to see the National Theater, Central Market, various parks, and a handful of colonial-era buildings while your guide mixes architecture stories with local history and current Costa Rican life. Groups are usually small (8–15 people). The pace is moderate but you’ll be standing and walking on uneven sidewalks the whole time. It’s a solid way to get oriented on your first or second day in the city.
The dry season (December–April) is best—less rain means more comfortable walking and clearer photos. Tours run year-round but June–October often means sudden afternoon downpours that can cut things short. Expect to pay around $25–45 per person for a standard group tour; private tours run $80–150 total depending on group size.
Pick a morning tour so you finish before the heat builds and before the streets get too crowded. Skip the ones that promise “all of San Jose in half a day”—they’re too rushed and usually just add a couple of photo stops outside the center. Wear comfortable shoes; the pavement is hard and often broken.
