The Rio Celeste hike takes you through dense rainforest in Tenorio Volcano National Park, following a turquoise river famous for its milky-blue color where two streams meet at Los Teñideros. Expect a moderate 3–5 hour hike with some muddy sections, river crossings, and a moderate climb to viewpoints. A good guide will point out wildlife (howler monkeys, toucans, maybe sloths), explain the geology, and adjust the pace. The main payoff is the waterfall and the striking colored pools, but the forest itself is the real draw. It gets humid and buggy; the trail can be slippery after rain.
Best time is the dry season (December to April) when trails are less muddy and river color pops brightest. June–November is greener but wetter with higher chance of afternoon downpours. From Liberia, expect a 2–2.5 hour drive each way. Tours run as half-day or full-day options. Expect to pay around $180–280 per person including transport from Liberia, park fees, and a licensed guide. Private tours cost more but give you flexibility.
Tip: book a morning departure so you reach the waterfall before the crowds and afternoon rain. Skip combining it with other distant stops in one day – the drive plus hike is enough. Bring quick-dry clothes, solid hiking shoes with good grip, insect repellent, and a waterproof bag for your phone. If you're short on time or energy, the standard half-day version from Liberia is plenty rewarding.
