What to Expect from a Hamam in Istanbul

A proper hamam is one of Istanbul's most distinctive experiences. You enter a steamy, marble-clad room heated by an underfloor furnace, lie on a heated central slab (göbek taşı), and sweat for 15-20 minutes. An attendant then gives you a vigorous scrub with a coarse mitt that peels off surprising amounts of dead skin, followed by a soapy foam massage and rinse. It's not a silent spa; expect echoing voices, splashing water, and a fairly social atmosphere. The whole ritual takes 45-90 minutes depending on add-ons. Women and men are strictly separated (by hours or sections), so couples go at different times or choose mixed-tourist baths that sometimes bend tradition.

Best time is shoulder season (spring or autumn) when it's cooler outside and the baths are less packed with tour groups. Summer gets hot and crowded. Expect to pay around $50-120 total: basic scrub-and-wash runs $50-70 while packages with oil massage or longer sessions push toward $100+. Skip the overpriced historic tourist traps near Sultanahmet if you're on a budget; many mid-tier neighborhood hamams deliver a more authentic and less rushed experience for less money. Pick a place that includes a proper kese (scrub) and lets you relax afterward with tea. Bring your own underwear or bikini if you're modest; most provide towels and wraps but they're thin.
