A traditional hammam is the Moroccan version of a bathhouse: steam room, buckets of hot water, black soap scrub (beldi), and a vigorous massage with a rough glove that removes layers of dead skin. Expect to be naked among other women (most places are single-sex), lying on a warm marble slab while attendants pour water over you and knead your muscles. It’s not a silent spa – there’s usually chatter, splashing, and the occasional bucket clang. The whole process takes 45-90 minutes and leaves you incredibly clean, relaxed, and sometimes a bit pink. Men’s sections exist but are often less polished.
Best time to go is autumn through spring; summer heat makes the steam room feel punishing. Expect to pay around 250-450 MAD for a basic hammam + scrub package at a decent local place, up to 700-900 MAD if you add massage and oils at a more upscale spa-hammam. Skip the ultra-touristy packages bundled with mosque tours unless you want the convenience. Pick a mid-range neighborhood hammam over the cheapest ones (hygiene varies) and always choose the “hammam + gommage” option – that’s the real experience. Bring your own underwear or disposable pair; many places provide everything else.
