Should You Do a Hammam in Istanbul?

A real hammam is a full-body exfoliation and wash in a historic marble steam room. You’ll be given a pestemal (thin towel), wooden clogs, and a bowl. First you sweat on the hot central stone (göbek taşı), then an attendant gives you a vigorous scrub with a rough mitt that peels off surprising amounts of dead skin. This is followed by a soapy foam massage and final rinse with buckets of warm water. It’s not a gentle spa treatment — it’s functional, sometimes brusque, and genuinely refreshing. Expect to feel a bit exposed and disoriented the first time. Most people leave glowing, slightly light-headed, and very clean.

Best time is spring (March–May) or fall (September–November) when it’s cooler outside; the contrast with the hot bath feels better and the tourist crowds are thinner. Expect to pay around $50–$120 depending on how historic the hammam is and whether you add oil massage. The mid-range places usually give the best balance of atmosphere and value.

Honest tips: Book a mixed or women-only hammam according to your comfort level — traditional ones are gender-separated. Always choose a place that includes the full scrub + foam wash; skip the overpriced “packages” with aromatherapy oils that add little. Bring your own underwear or bikini bottom if you’re modest; most places provide disposable ones but they’re not great.
