Is Hanauma Bay Worth Snorkeling?

Hanauma Bay is a shallow, protected volcanic crater in Honolulu that used to be outstanding snorkeling. Today it's heavily used and the reef has taken a beating from crowds. You can still see parrotfish, tangs, butterflyfish, and the occasional turtle, but don't expect the vibrant, uncrowded experience you see in older photos. The bay is pretty, the water is usually calm inside the reef, and it's an easy shore entry. Most people spend 1–2 hours in the water then leave. It's a decent half-day activity if you're staying in Waikiki and want something simple, but it's no longer a must-do for serious snorkelers.

Best time is early morning (gates open at 6–7am) on weekdays outside summer and holidays; avoid weekends entirely if you can. Summer offers warmer water but bigger crowds. Expect to pay around $25–$45 total per person including parking or shuttle, entrance fee, and basic gear rental. Skip the crowded tram down the hill and walk it instead. Bring your own snorkel gear if you have it—rentals are overpriced and often poorly maintained. Arrive before the buses or you'll waste time in line and miss the best conditions.
