Nadi Handicraft Market: Worth Visiting?

The Nadi handicraft market is a compact, busy stop filled with wooden carvings, woven baskets, masi bark cloth, and plenty of jewelry. Expect enthusiastic vendors who will call you over and demonstrate items. The experience is more commercial than cultural; most stalls sell similar stock, though you can find decent handmade pieces if you look past the mass-produced souvenirs. A typical visit lasts 30-45 minutes. It's often bundled with temple tours or city drives, so you'll usually arrive with a group. The air is hot, the floors are uneven, and bargaining is expected.

Best time is the dry season from May to October when it's less humid and tours run more reliably. Expect to pay around FJD 15-40 for small carvings or jewelry, FJD 25-80 for larger masi or wooden items. A full guided half-day tour that includes the market usually costs between FJD 80-150 per person including transport.

Pick well-made traditional masi cloth or small tanoa kava bowls if you want something authentic that won't fall apart. Skip the cheap shell necklaces and "cannibal forks" marketed heavily to tourists; they're repetitive and rarely good quality. Go early in the morning before the big tour buses arrive if you want breathing room to browse.
