Hang Gliding in Rio: What to Know

Expect a tandem flight with an experienced pilot so you don’t need any training. After a short van ride up to Pedra Bonita or a similar launch site above the city, you’ll get a quick safety briefing, get strapped in, run a few steps off the ramp, and suddenly you’re soaring. The first 30 seconds feel intense; after that it’s surprisingly calm – just wind, huge views of Ipanema, Corcovado, and the beaches stretching out below. Flights usually last 10-25 minutes depending on conditions before you land on the soft sand at São Conrado or nearby. It’s a genuine thrill but not scary if you’re okay with heights.

The best time is the dry season from May to October when winds are more predictable and rain is rare. Mornings are normally calmer. Expect to pay around $280–$350 for a standard tandem flight including transport from your hotel in the South Zone. Add-ons like photos or video push it higher.

Pick a tandem hang glider over paraglider if you want the classic open-air sensation; skip packages that bundle it with other tours if you only want the flight – they’re usually rushed. Go early in your trip so bad weather on your booked day still gives you a chance to reschedule.
