Happy Hollow Zoo in San Jose: Worth It?

Happy Hollow is a small, pleasant zoo attached to a modest amusement park in San Jose. Expect a few dozen species – giraffes, tigers, monkeys, flamingos, and a decent playground area for kids. It's compact, so you can easily see everything in 2–3 hours without feeling rushed. The animal exhibits are straightforward rather than spectacular; it's more like a friendly neighborhood zoo than a major wildlife destination. The rides are basic but popular with little ones – think carousel, small train, and a couple of gentle thrill options.

Best time to visit is spring or early fall on a weekday morning. Summers get hot and crowded, especially weekends. Expect to pay around $25–$40 per person depending on age and whether you add rides; parking is extra. Families with young kids usually get the most value. One solid tip: skip the food inside if you can – it's overpriced and average. Pack snacks or eat before/after in downtown San Jose. Another: buy tickets online ahead of time to avoid the ticket line, and focus your energy on the animal habitats in the morning when the creatures are more active. It's not a full-day destination but makes a nice half-day stop if you're already in the area with kids.
