Happy Hollow is a modest, pleasant zoo attached to a small amusement park in San Jose. Expect a compact layout you can cover comfortably in 2–4 hours. The animal collection is limited but well cared for—think giraffes, tigers, monkeys, flamingos, and a decent reptile house. The habitats are older rather than cutting-edge, yet the staff clearly work hard to keep things clean and the animals active. It’s not a world-class zoo, but it’s calm, shaded, and easy to walk. Kids under 8 usually love the carousel and modest rides that come with admission.
Best time to go is spring or fall on a weekday morning; summer weekends get hot and crowded fast. Expect to pay around $25–40 per adult and $20–30 per child depending on whether you add rides or buy a membership. Parking is extra and limited. One solid tip: skip the overpriced food inside and eat at the nearby restaurants on Story Road instead. Prioritize the big-cat area and the playground over the smaller bird exhibits if time is tight. It’s a decent half-day stop if you’re already in San Jose with kids, but probably not worth a special trip from farther away.
