Boston Harbor Islands: Worth a Day Trip?

The Boston Harbor Islands offer a surprisingly quick escape from the city. You’ll ride a ferry out, walk easy trails, climb old fortifications, and get decent views back toward the skyline. Expect a mix of history, birds, and rocky beaches rather than Caribbean sand. Most people do one or two islands in a half-day; the full three-hour narrated tour covers several without much time ashore. It’s low-key and family-friendly, but it can feel crowded on summer weekends and the islands are exposed so wind and fog can change the mood fast.

Best time is late spring through early fall. June and September give you decent weather with smaller crowds; July and August are warmer but busier and hotter on the boats. Expect to pay around $50–85 per adult for a standard ferry round-trip plus any park entrance or tour fee—kids and seniors pay less. Pack water, sunscreen, and snacks; food options on the islands are limited.

Pick Georges Island if you want to explore the old Civil War fort and have decent hiking. Skip trying to see too many islands in one day; you’ll spend most of the time on boats. Bring binoculars and layers—the wind off the water is almost always stronger than you expect.
