The harbor islands ferry gives you a solid half-day escape from the city with decent views of the skyline, lighthouses, and a chance to walk around a few small islands that feel surprisingly remote. Expect a working harbor ride—tankers, container ships, and seabirds—followed by basic docks, short trails, and picnic tables rather than groomed attractions. Boats run from spring through fall; the islands themselves are nicest from late May to mid-September when the weather is reliable and the water looks inviting. Summer weekends get crowded, so aim for a weekday if you can.
Expect to pay around $25–45 per adult depending on whether you choose a simple round-trip ferry or a longer narrated tour that includes a stop at one of the outer islands. Kids and seniors pay less. One honest tip: pick the shorter outer-island route that actually lands you on an island for an hour or two of exploring; it feels more like a real trip than the constant-cruising harbor tour that stays on the boat the whole time. Skip trying to combine this with a full Freedom Trail day—the ferry schedule and Boston traffic rarely line up well. Bring water, sunscreen, and snacks; facilities on the islands are limited.
