Kayaking the Boston Harbor Islands

Expect a mix of protected harbor paddling and open-water stretches with real current, wind, and swell. You’ll see the Boston skyline, pass working cargo ships, and land on a few quiet islands with rocky shores and seabirds. It’s not a lazy river float—conditions can change fast, and you’ll be paddling 4–8 miles depending on the route. Most trips launch from the mainland near downtown or South Boston and visit 2–3 islands. It feels surprisingly wild for being so close to the city, but you’re never truly remote.

The best time is late May through early October. June–September gives you the warmest water and longest days, though July and August can be hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms. May and October are quieter and often less windy but much colder if you flip. Expect to pay around $65–$110 per person for a guided half-day trip including kayak, gear, and guide. Full-day or sunset options push closer to $120–$160. Renting kayaks to go independently is possible but not recommended for first-timers due to strong tidal currents and shipping channels.

Pick a morning tour that includes a stop on one of the outer islands like Spectacle or Georges; the wildlife and views are noticeably better. Skip the ultra-short “harbor sunset” paddle if you actually want to reach the islands—it’s mostly just circling the inner harbor with a drink. Bring a dry bag, wear quick-dry layers, and don’t underestimate the wind once you clear the buildings.
