Edinburgh Underground Ghost Tour: Worth It?

These tours take you beneath the Royal Mile into the real underground vaults and chambers that were sealed off for centuries. Expect low, dark, damp spaces where guides tell stories of plague victims, witches, body snatchers, and the city's violent past. It's a mix of history and ghost stories — some tours lean heavily on theatrics and jump scares, others focus more on the grim reality of 18th- and 19th-century life underground. The experience is genuinely atmospheric; the vaults feel claustrophobic and cold even in summer. Most last 1–1.5 hours and involve a fair bit of walking on uneven surfaces.

Best time is autumn or winter evenings when it's properly dark and the atmosphere hits harder. Summer tours still run but lose some of the eerie edge. Expect to pay around £15–£25 per person depending on the operator and whether it's a small group or large one. Private tours or ones with extras push toward the higher end.

Tip: Choose a smaller group tour if you can — the large ones can feel like herding cattle and the atmosphere suffers. Skip the ones that promise "real ghosts" or actors in costume; the best ones stick to well-researched history with a light touch of the supernatural. Wear good shoes and bring a jacket — it's cold and slippery down there regardless of the season.
