Healesville Sanctuary: Worth It?

Healesville Sanctuary is a solid half-day wildlife experience about an hour’s drive from Melbourne. Expect spacious, naturalistic enclosures rather than cramped zoo cages. You’ll see koalas, kangaroos, platypus, Tasmanian devils, birds of prey, and a decent range of Australian animals up close. The sanctuary focuses on conservation and rehabilitation, so some animals may be off-display for health reasons. Walking paths are easy but can get muddy after rain; allow 3–4 hours to wander at a relaxed pace without rushing. It’s family-friendly yet calm enough for adults who just want to observe native wildlife properly.

Best time to visit is spring (September–November) when the weather is mild and animals are active, or autumn (March–May) to avoid both summer heat and winter crowds. Expect to pay around $40–60 per adult for entry; add $80–150 per person if you join a guided tour or VIP animal encounter from Melbourne. Driving yourself is cheapest; a full-day tour that bundles it with another stop is more convenient but eats most of a day.

Tip: book the platypus viewing session if it’s on offer – it’s genuinely one of the better chances to see them active. Skip the generic bird show unless you have kids; the real value is in the quieter trails and smaller exhibits. Bring your own snacks – the café is average and pricey.
