Hike to Kaena Point, Oahu: What You Need to Know

This is a solid half-day adventure on Oahu's westernmost point. The trail is an old, deeply rutted dirt road that runs about 2.5 miles each way along a wild, windswept coast. Expect dramatic sea cliffs, blowholes, tide pools, and a good chance of spotting seabirds and monk seals at the point itself. The terrain is exposed, rocky in spots, and can be dusty or muddy depending on recent rain. It's not a casual beach walk—bring solid shoes, plenty of water, sun protection, and respect the powerful surf that can crash unpredictably onto the rocks.

The best time is spring or summer when the ocean is calmer and winds are lighter; avoid it after heavy rain or in winter when big swells make the trail feel dicey. Expect to pay around $15–40 total per person if you drive and bring your own snacks, or $80–150 if you join a small guided group that provides transport, water, and binoculars. The state park itself has no entry fee.

Pick the early morning start to beat the heat and crowds. Skip trying to drive the last rough section of road unless you have a high-clearance 4x4—most rental cars won't like it. Pack out everything and give the monk seals plenty of space if you see them hauled out on the rocks.
