Visiting Santa Ana's Historic Courthouse

The Old Orange County Courthouse in Santa Ana is a handsome 1901 Beaux-Arts building that's surprisingly easy to visit on foot from downtown. Inside you'll find restored courtrooms, interesting local history exhibits on the ground floor, and the chance to sit in on actual proceedings if courts are in session. The architecture is the real draw—ornate woodwork, marble floors, and a dramatic central staircase that feels like a movie set. Expect to spend 45 minutes to an hour wandering around. It's quiet, self-guided, and feels more like stepping into local civic life than a polished tourist attraction.

Best time to go is weekday mornings between 9am and noon when the building is open and active. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather for walking around Santa Ana. Summers are brutally hot and the area can feel empty on weekends. Expect to pay around $8–15 total per person including parking in a nearby lot and maybe a coffee afterward. Entry to the courthouse itself is free.

Pick the third-floor former courtroom if it's open—it's the most impressive space. Skip the small gift area unless you need a postcard; it's underwhelming. Park once and combine this with a quick walk through the nearby Artists Village if you have an extra hour.
