Visiting Charleston's Historic City Market

The Charleston City Market is a long, open-air historic shed in the heart of downtown that’s been operating in some form since the early 1800s. Today it’s a mix of souvenir stalls, local artisans, sweetgrass basket weavers, and food vendors. Expect crowds, especially midday, with vendors selling everything from handmade jewelry and artwork to pralines, hot sauces, and touristy t-shirts. The atmosphere is lively but can feel touristy; it’s more of a casual browsing experience than a traditional farmers’ market. You can easily walk the full length in 20-40 minutes depending on how much you stop.

The best time to visit is spring (March-May) or fall (October-November) when temperatures are pleasant and crowds are manageable. Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, while winter is quieter but chilly. Expect to pay around $0–$40 per person: the market itself is free to enter, but most people spend $15–25 on snacks or small souvenirs, or up to $40 if you add a guided walking or carriage tour that includes the market.

Honest tips: Do buy a sweetgrass basket from one of the longtime Gullah makers if it fits your budget—they’re authentic and support local tradition. Skip the pre-packaged “gourmet” food gifts in favor of fresh pralines or a quick biscuit from a vendor. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst crowds and heat.
