Edinburgh Hop-On Hop-Off Bus: Worth It?

The hop-on hop-off bus gives you a straightforward way to cover Edinburgh's main sights without figuring out local buses or walking everywhere. Expect a double-decker with open top (when weather allows), recorded commentary in several languages, and stops at the Royal Mile, Holyrood, the Castle, New Town, and Leith. It's convenient but moves slowly in summer traffic, and the live guides are hit-or-miss compared to the pre-recorded track. The full loop takes 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. In peak season you'll rarely wait more than 15-20 minutes between buses.

Best time is late spring or early autumn when the weather is milder and crowds are thinner. Summer is busiest and hottest on the open top; winter runs with fewer buses and you’ll mostly stay downstairs. Expect to pay around £20-£28 for a 24-hour ticket, or £25-£35 for 48 hours. Multi-day tickets rarely justify the extra cost unless you plan to use it heavily both days.

Pick the ticket that includes the New Town loop if you want to see both sides of the city; skip the expensive “premium” options with boat tours unless you actually plan to use them. Sit on the right side going uphill for better Castle views. If it’s pouring rain or you only have one day, you’re often better off with a regular bus pass and walking the Royal Mile instead.
